Clearly the cause for their obvious sadness is negative, as shown by the additional elements of umbrellas and bowed heads, among the dark, formal clothes that they wear. However to assume that there can only be one answer to the question "what is happening in this photo?" would be too presumptious for my tastes, therefore I shall suggest, to perhaps a greater mind a possibility of the occurrence in the snapshot. I believe that the event is a funeral, however because of elements like the lack of any religious symbol or tool necessary for a burial, it wouldn't be incorrect to inference that the what is being mourned isn't a body, but more of an aspect of equality. Which one cannot be determined as from the countless glances spared, it seems there are not enough clues to go by.
I agree with Alex, you can tell it is a sad picture because everyone is wearing blue which represents sadness. Also, there are umbrellas which means it is raining which also represents sadness/depression. I believe this is a funeral because they arn't dressed casual, and when there are funerals whether in movies or other pieces of art, it is almost always raining. -Sophie
I agree with Sophie and Alex. I guess it is something sad, because everyone is wearing blue. Also, the painting just has a gloomy vibe. In addition, the painting has a omniscent and cynical mood. Also, everyone has no faces in the painting; so their identity does not exist; rather their race is shown. In my opinion, to combine the sadness and the Black race, probably would define this painting; suggesting the African Americans possibly went through sufferings during the Harlem Renaissance.
